Frantik Magazine – The Bad Night EP
The Bad Night EP seems to be a contradiction of a bad night for Kingsize but rather is a ‘bad’ night figuratively speaking, meaning good. Confused yet?
The emotive rock approach of this EP does contradict the raw intensity of The Good Fight EP which gives the band new depth and perception. Still intact are the big hooks, melodies, gritty vocals and guitars and the infectious rock grooves but gone are the anthemic power rock riffs and fast-paced power grooves.
The fuzzy swing of “Drug Run (no fun)” coupled with it’s catchy lyrical content make for one amusing listen. “Rabbits” goes big with a wall of fuzz sprinkled with an undeniable bluesy groove over some great vocal overtones. The melancholic ambience of “Tourniquet Queen” puts this EP to rest, ending what would be the bad night.
For a good introduction to Kingsize, The Good Fight EP would be great to listen to first, then follow it up like a chaser to your whisky shot with this just as great EP, The Bad Night EP.
Me myself am liking The Good Fight EP more but The Bad Night EP definitely holds its own and has its moments. I’m not sure either why two EP’s were made instead of one big enchilada but I’m sure the band’s got their reasons why and who cares right? They both sound good and establish Kingsize as one hard rockin’ machine who should not get lost in the shuffle of bands screaming to be heard.
